Constipation is a serious condition, which is usually ignored by many. This could be a silent sign for something fatal if not addressed at the right time. Before we get into discussing constipation causes, constipation prevention and constipation treatment, it is necessary to understand the signs of constipation that your body gives you. Anyone suffering from poor bowel movement is likely to experience painful passage of stool. Additionally, you don’t have the urge to pass stool on a daily basis which gives you enough reason to worry. Other signs that you should pay attention to are smelly & hard poops. Constipation is a condition which if not treated can lead to deadly diseases.

Constipation Causes

This condition arises when colon absorbs too much water or when the colon muscles become weak. Other aspects that lead to constipation include dehydration, lack of fibre, inactivity, medications, irritable bowel and stress.

After realising what causes constipation, let us delve deeper and identify foods that cause constipation. Here is a list of foods that should be consumed either in moderation or avoided completely during constipation.

Meat and Eggs

There is absolutely nothing wrong with meat and egg if eaten in moderation. People who gorge on these food items daily are prone to constipation. Therefore it is advisable to incorporate these foods in your meals moderately.

Processed Foods

Since processed foods are low on fibre, processed foods are likely to induce constipation.  To avoid indigestion, gas and bloating, you should increase the intake of water.

Dairy Product

Surprisingly dairy products such as ice cream, milk, cheeses etc also cause constipation. Since these foods offer high nutritive value, do not take these off your diet completely, instead consume in moderation.

Other Foods that Cause Constipation

Other foods that could lead to constipation and are advised to go easy on during constipation include bananas, black tea and chocolate. These foods could be replaced with berries, raisins, apricots, plums etc to relieve from the chronic condition.

Foods to Relieve Constipation Fast

Here is a smoothie that could be beneficial for constipation relief.

  • Take a blender and put ice in it.
  • Later add 6 pitted prunes commonly known as dried plums, 1 cup apple juice, 1 cup crushed ice, 1 cup organic yogurt, pinch of nutmeg and ¼ teaspoon cinnamon powder.
  • Blend these ingredients well. To add taste, you can also use a pinch of cumin powder and cinnamon powder.

Legumes, fruits and vegetables are good source of soluble fibres that make faeces soft. Insoluble fibres such as wheat bran, wholegrain breads and cereals add bulk to the faeces.

Since vegetables help relieve constipation, you can add a glass of vegetable juice to your diet. Vegetables such as carrot, cucumber, tomato, bottle gourd etc could be used for making fresh veggie smoothie in a blender. Add some lemon juice, salt and freshly cracked pepper to it for enhancing taste.

Other foods like prunes, nuts and seeds (Chia seeds, sunflower seeds, melon seeds, sesame seeds) also act towards relieving from constipation.
