Home Remedies for Dandruff Treatment


Having the itch to scratch your dandruff laden scalp amid a gathering, interview or at an office party could leave you embarrassed. No matter how well you do your hair, the white flakes scattered around your shoulder is a huge put off. It not just dulls your hair but also restricts you from wearing dark coloured outfits. Unfortunately, dandruff is slowly becoming a common issue across age groups from adults to teenagers to even small kids. While we usually incline towards cosmetic products available in market, here are some home remedies for dandruff treatment that you can try to prevent the repercussions of dandruff plagued scalp.

What Causes Dandruff?

Before we start with home remedy for dandruff, let us first discuss dandruff causes-Dandruff is primarily caused by a fungus Malassezia that spreads on the scalp skin. It is a condition that arises in people with either dry scalp or due to excessive production of oil on the scalp. Other common dandruff causes are as follows

  • Unhealthy Diet
  • Brushing hair irregularly or improperly
  • Shampooing hair irregularly
  • Stress
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Eczema
  • Seborrheic dermatitis

On one hand, hair thinning or hair loss is caused due to poor hair growth, whereas on the other hand, dandruff is induced due to unhealthy scalp growth. It therefore becomes necessary to curb both the conditions as one can aggravate the other.

In another scenario, dandruff and white hair co-exist, making things worse for you. Hair-greying is a serious issue which some believe is caused due to dandruff. In most of the cases, pre-mature greying triggers due to hereditary. Stress, improper diet, improper wash are also identified as some of the reasons, hence one should take proper measures to prevent scalp from getting infected from dandruff causing fungus.

Home Remedy for Dandruff


We are all aware of garlic’s medicinal properties and how it is used to curb cholesterol in our body. This powerful food is anti-fungal in nature and can be used with honey and ginger in ground form to get rid of dandruff.

Neem and Olive Oil

Neem paste with olive oil is another way of getting rid of dandruff. Crush dried neem leaves to make powder and mix it with 4tbsp olive oil in a bowl. Apply this paste on your scalp and leave for about an hour before washing with shampoo. Or you can boil neem leaves for 30 minutes and apply it for half an hour on your scalp. Wash well with water to get maximum benefits.

Coconut and Honey Scrub

Mix 2tsp coconut oil, 2 tsp olive oil, 2 tsp honey and 3 tsp yogurt in a bowl. Keep the consistency thick and massage gently for 10 minutes. After massaging, leave the paste in your hair for 45 minutes and wash it with a shampoo. Post washing apply some coconut oil to your scalp and hair.

Tea Tree Oil

Its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties make it suitable for dandruff treatment. Simply add few drops of tea tree oil in your shampoo and use it normally. Read about Tea Tree oil for hair health.


All you need is a cup of yogurt. Apply it to your scalp after shampooing your hair and leave for 15 minutes. Rinse well with water and use small amount of shampoo if required.

While oiling is good for hair, refrain from using oil if you have dandruff. This could aggravate the condition.
